Cybersex & Online Relationships

Cybersex is defined as: Type-written communication for the sole purpose of achieving sexual arousal. Men and women engage in cybersex about equally. Overall, about 6 percent of Internet users are compulsive in their online behavior, and about half of those are sexually compulsive. About 50% percent of people that engage in cybersex take the contact a step further by talking on the phone, and about 15 to 30 percent meet in person.

Until recently, men dominated the overall use of the Net but women are now online more than men. Both men and women use the Internet for Cybersex - defined as the consensual sexual discussion online for the purpose of achieving arousal or an orgasm.

Internet addiction offers a fantasy world in which there are endless people who appear to be interesting, and more importantly, interested in you. Young, sexually inexperienced people, especially males, may find it easier to engage in Internet "relationships" than risk the face-to-face rejection of a real person. As the addict becomes more immersed in this shadow world, denial takes hold and he or she comes to view these "friends" and "partners" as more real than the actual spouse or family.
